Supply Chain Management
Bristol-Myers Squibb works with suppliers in an attempt to ensure the
highest level of quality, expertise, experience, and fit with our operating
culture. We expect our suppliers to comply with all legal and regulatory
requirements, including environmental management.
Supplier Evaluations
Bristol-Myers Squibb may conduct a Quality or EHS evaluation of a contractor
or supplier. Determining whether an evaluation is warranted depends on
the extent of Bristol-Myers Squibb’s involvement in the operations
of the contractor or supplier, as well as the nature of such operations.
In addition, we have developed an EHS questionnaire that may be sent
to third-party manufacturers that manufacture, finish or package Bristol-Myers Squibb products, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), intermediates or other critical non-commodity materials.
Based on the results of the questionnaire, we may conduct a site evaluation.
EHS works closely with sourcing staff to determine the priorities for
the site evaluation. The evaluation team will make recommendations and
then develop and track an action plan for the contractor. The questionnaire
or site visit may be repeated periodically, based on risk.
During 2006, Bristol-Myers Squibb conducted 32 questionnaire reviews with 25 on-site visits. Bristol-Myers Squibb conducted
39 questionnaire reviews with 35 on-site visits during 2007.
Through initiatives such as this, Bristol-Myers Squibb benefits by:
- Sending a clear message to our suppliers that EHS is important
- Supporting our ability to recognize strong performers among our suppliers
- Strengthening our ability to encourage EHS performance among our partners

- Receiving feedback on best practices and opportunities for continued partnership and dialogue with suppliers
Green Suppliers Network
Bristol-Myers Squibb, in conjunction with other major pharmaceutical
companies, has signed on to the Green
Suppliers Network (GSN), a collaborative
venture between industry and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
GSN works with all levels of the manufacturing supply chain to achieve
environmental and economic benefits, to improve performance, minimize
waste generation, and remove institutional roadblocks through its innovative
approach to leveraging a national network of manufacturing technical
assistance resources. With GSN support, suppliers can continuously improve
their products and processes, increase energy efficiency, identify cost-saving
opportunities, and optimize resources and technologies with the aim of
eliminating waste.
To date, five pharmaceutical suppliers in Puerto Rico have completed
the evaluation process, resulting in over $8 million in annual cost savings
and $9 million in one-time savings identified. Environmental impact improvements
included more than 1.5 million gallons of water saved and almost 200,000
pounds of solid waste reduced. Bristol-Myers Squibb hosted a meeting
in March 2006 with 18 company suppliers to encourage their participation
in this growing and highly successful program.
Supply Chain Management in Mexico
Bristol-Myers Squibb in Mexico has adopted supplier management as part
of its Sustainability 2010 goals. In July 2006, the San Angel facility
organized an event to recognize those suppliers to Bristol-Myers Squibb
and other companies who participated in Phase I of the eco-efficiency
program “Competitive Chains.” This event was co-organized
by the Mexico Officer of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation
of NAFTA and officers from IGEMI-Mexico. Phase I was held from October
2005 to April 2006, and resulted in the identification of more than $1
million in cost savings. Written recognition was presented to the suppliers
by the Ministry of Environment.
Phase II of the program was launched in July 2006, with the participation
of suppliers to Bristol-Myers Squibb and other companies. The participating suppliers saved $7 million in operating costs, 147 thousand cubic meters of natural gas, 260 thousand kilowatt-hours of electricity, and 5 thousand cubic meters of water.
Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative
Bristol-Myers Squibb joined other pharmaceutical companies to form the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI) in 2005. The initiative is designed to leverage efficiencies, reduce risk, and implement responsible practices in the pharmaceutical supply chain. In 2007, the PSCI released the Pharmaceutical Industry Principles for Responsible Supply Chain Management (“the Principles”). These Principles address five areas of responsible business practices throughout the pharmaceutical industry's supply chain: ethics, labor, health and safety, environment and related management systems. The benefits are expected to include increased efficiency by standardizing expectations and implementation schemes; reduced potential liabilities by improving workplace conditions; and reduced risk of business interruption due to substandard social or environmental practices.
Bristol-Myers Squibb's third-party manufacturer EHS assessment process is aligned with the Principles, and the company is currently evaluating implementation options for the other areas covered by the Principles. For more information, please visit the PSCI web site.
Contract Employees
Bristol-Myers Squibb uses agencies that provide temporary employees
to perform a wide range of services, and our EHS staff is developing
guidance that addresses key issues, such as training. EHS personnel also
evaluate contracts for maintenance, mailroom, security, cafeteria, and
other services to make sure that they cover EHS performance issues. A
guideline for developing a contractor safety program is published on
the company’s internal EHS website.
Supplier Diversity
Our supplier diversity program is charged with cultivating relationships
with minority- and women-owned small businesses in the U.S. and Puerto
Rico that share the company’s commitment to excellence. The goal
is to ensure our business approach reflects the broad marketplace we
serve. Additional information is available on the Bristol-Myers Squibb
Supplier Link.
We follow the U.S. Small Business Administration guideline regarding
goals for minority- and women-owned and small businesses (5 percent minority-owned,
5 percent women-owned, and 23 percent small businesses).
Bristol-Myers Squibb demonstrates its support by participating in professional
diversity organizations, including:
- Board of Directors, Women’s Business Enterprise National Council
- Board of Directors, National Minority Supplier Development Council
- Co-chair, National Association of Purchasing Agents Supplier Diversity
Pharmaceutical Forum
- Member, Minority Economic Development Council Corporate Advisory
Board
Resource Conservation and Eco-efficiency
An initiative is underway with the company’s Global Strategic
Sourcing group to better understand and encourage reduction of our suppliers’ environmental
impacts. For many years, Bristol-Myers Squibb has worked to reduce the
toxicity, risks, and hazards of materials we purchase for use in our
products and processes. We also are pursuing opportunities to address
resource conservation and eco-efficiency of nonhazardous materials.
We plan to actively partner with our key suppliers to identify and implement
changes that will reduce the EHS impacts of these key components. We
expect to pursue significant energy savings and natural resource conservation
through our efforts, as well as improvements to the reliability of our
supply chain.
