office paper and cardboard, 4 tons of plastic, and 8 tons of glass.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Performance Track program, for
excellence in environmental stewardship.
- The facility has developed a brochure (364k
PDF) to help raise awareness about local threatened and endangered species.
This brochure also encourages taking steps in order to protect these
species.
- The Wallingford site has initiated a mercury reduction program to
reduce the use of mercury and when not possible ensure it is recycled
properly. This program involves substituting non-mercury thermometers
for mercury based ones, recycling all unwanted and broken mercury thermometers
and fluorescent light bulbs, and secure land filling all dry cell batteries.
- The Wallingford site is participating in the EPA Labs 21 program,
which looks at ways to design in and improve the energy efficient and
water consumption in research laboratories.
- With the installation of the cogeneration (cogen) unit for both power
and steam, the building of the daycare facility, the building of the
E-F node, and the expansion of the materials handling building, the
company is saving energy, increasing capacity for pharmaceutical research,
improving safety, and enhancing flexibility for researchers.
- The facility developed a brochure about the progress on the Sustainability
2010 goals.
- The facility has obtained Wildlife Habitat Certification for the site.
- The Wallingford facility supported the Connecticut Race for the Cure
Walkathon, with many employees participating.
- A new butterfly garden highlighting the endangered plant, Solidago
rigida (stiff goldenrod), and other native species has been established
in order to attract endangered butterfly species as well.
- Plans to preserve a large tract of farmland hosting numerous old forest
beech and oak trees covering approximately 50 acres are in the making.
Extending the existing nature trail through the Butterfly Garden and
this new tract will increase the trail to two miles.
- The facility prepared and issued a stormwater management brochure
to site personnel during Earth Day 2004.
- The Wallingford facility has created a nature trail to provide a fitness
walk and encourage wildlife habitat awareness. Bird boxes and bat houses
have been installed and features from the farmland and apple orchard
have been preserved and picnic tables added for an ideal setting for
the enjoyment of the diverse local and migrant bird population.
Goals and Objectives
- Achieve 100 percent compliance with required EHS training programs.
- Continue to enhance the Wallingford EPA Labs 21 program for energy
and water conservation.
- Utilize the Sustainability 2010 goals Environmental Effect Analysis
to develop performance targets and goals for Wallingford to reduce water
consumption and nitrogen oxide emissions.
