Facility Information
NIJMEGEN, NETHERLANDS
MEAD JOHNSON NUTRITIONALS
Facts and Figures

Economic Development
- The facility directly contributes to the local economy through employee
wages and benefits.
Community and Social Progress

- To be in compliance with local legislation and BMS guidelines, we
have improved workplace conditions. This includes creating improved
physical labor circumstances and an inspiring work environment for team
members.
- We have implemented the following improvements in physical circumstances:
- Being a powder producing facility, unsafe situations can be caused
by static electricity. The plant has made several improvements to
further reduce the hazards caused by static electricity.
- The Quality Assurance cabinet for hazardous material has been
upgraded.
- The plant is 100 percent asbestos free.
- Built a new micro lab and upgraded the chemical lab to improve
work conditions. This is an example of a synergistic improvement;
better labor circumstances result in improved product quality.
- Installed new palletizing machinery with improved ergonomic features.
Environmental Performance

- The Mead Johnson facility in Nijmegen obtained certification against
the final ISO 14001 standard in December 1996 and successfully recertified
in February 2000, without observation. The facility had already achieved
certification to ISO 9002 when plant management decided to capitalize
on the synergy between ISO's quality and environmental management standards.
Significant cost savings and both improved quality and EHS performance
have been obtained. The application of "productivity equals EHS
performance divided by costs" is an important credo.
- Received a complete new Environmental Permit in 2004.
- In 2005 Mead Johnson Nijmegen issued the third Facility Environmental
Program "BMP3," in which the environmental objectives are
established until 2010.
- Revised the new electrical power contract to "green power."
- Replaced cooling towers with energy efficient units.
- The motto for the Nijmegen plant is: "Less is More." By
creating "less" waste one will have "more" product
that will be produced right the first time. By using "less"
materials one will have "more" profit. By using "less"
energy one will have a better (= "more") environment and "more"
profit. By creating "less" waste one will create a "more"
productive and a "more" safe work environment.
- One waste contractor now manages all waste handling, including the
reporting function. Reducing the number of contracts from eight to one
improves our ability to trace our waste and decreases the administrative
burden. This is another example of "Less is More."
