Facts and Figures

The Karachi facility is located in the industrial zone of the Korangi
Industrial Area of the city of Karachi, which is the largest city of Pakistan.
The Karachi facility manufactures the following types of products:
- Cardiovascular
- Steroids
- Vitamins
- Central nervous system
- Antibiotics
Economic Development
- The facility directly contributes to the local economy through employee
wages and benefits.
Community and Social Progress
- Awareness building for Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) matters
among all the employees of the organization, and remains an ongoing
function.
- The company provided car seat belts to the employees free of cost
and also compensated for their installation cost. A majority of company
employees, using cars for commuting to and from the office, are now
conscientious users of the seat belts.
- An employee suggestion program is active within the facility. It
provides for the company employees to observe and report any EHS related
concern or issues. These reported matters are then investigated and
addressed by the EHS department.
- Each year the facility holds an 'Annual EHS Day' for the employees
of the company and invites people from other related areas to participate
in the event, which primarily focuses on enhancing the awareness of
EHS concerns. The event also provides an opportunity for the families
of the employees to interact with each other, visit the work place of
their spouses, and learn about EHS issues and concerns that surround
the people and the environment in general. Various events are organized
throughout the day including fire fighting, first aid demonstrations,
speeches on EHS topics, poster competition, sports, safety quiz, videos
etc. The day is celebrated as a major EHS event and is enjoyed by our
employees and their families.
- The facility also holds 'EHS Week' and 'EHS Month' once a year. During
these days, various EHS activities are carried out extensively throughout
the plant and employees are involved. Various training programs, awareness
programs, and practical demonstrations are organized based on the theme
of the Week or Month.
How Training Works: A First Aid Incident Report
Recently an incident took place at the Korangi residential area, in Karachi.
In August 2004, one of our cafeteria staff employees (who was trained
for First Aid by the First Aid team as per EHS policy) became a hero to
a young boy and his family.
A young boy who lived next door was climbing wooden stairs but slipped
and as a result fell to the ground from some height, becoming unconscious.
Along with other people in the neighborhood, the employee rushed to the
spot where the young boy had fallen. Family members realized that he was
not breathing and became panicky. The employee asked family members to
open the mouth and check for the tongue blocking the air passage. When
his mouth was opened, the employee noticed that the tongue was blocking
the throat therefore causing hindrance in the airway passage.
Our employee helped by bringing the tongue of the victim into normal
position resulting in the clearing of the airway passage and restoration
of the supply of oxygen.
The boy gradually started breathing normally, became conscious, and recovered
from the fall. The victim's family members were very thankful to the hero
for saving the life of their son by responding immediately to an emergency
situation.
The Bristol-Myers Squibb employee believes that the leadership role he
took on that day was a direct result of the training that he received
from the Bristol-Myers Squibb First Aid Team. By learning basic training
skills to handle emergency situations our hero acknowledged that he was
able to prevent a situation that could have resulted in a fatality for
the family.
This real-life incident reminds us here at Bristol-Myers Squibb, by doing
little things, we can make a huge difference in our lives and in the lives
of others around us. It does not take a Herculean effort to be a Hero.
Environmental Performance
- The facility focuses on meeting environmental challenges and has
launched a waste minimization program to address and reduce waste generation

Program for Industries (ETPI), an NGO supported by the Federation of

of Netherlands, for heightening environmental awareness.

chapter of LEAD International (Leadership for Environment and Development)
as an associate of their Cohort-9 program.
