Environmental Performance

- UPSA obtained the ISO 14001 certification in 2001, and has maintained
it through 2006.
- The facility is completing a cooling water program, which entails
a closed-loop cooling water system and discontinues cooling water discharges
to the local sewer system.
- Energy reductions have been established that will reduce electricity
consumption due to air conditioning systems by 40 percent, compared
with 2002 consumption.
- The facility is establishing systems and programs to achieve OHSAS
18000 certification in 2006.
The
facility has introduced a program for collecting the plastic corks from
bottles of sodas, water, and milk. The corks are given to an organization
that collects recyclable plastic corks and sells them to a recycling
company. The organization uses these funds to buy wheelchairs for disabled
people, contribute financially to an orphanage in Madagascar, and help
young people in trouble.
- The facility has adopted the European Pond Turtle as part of the company's
Sustainability 2010 goal
to encourage each facility and business to help protect endangered species
and habitats.
