Diabetes
There
is clear evidence of a global epidemic of diabetes. In 1985 an
estimated 30 million people worldwide had diabetes, and in 2000
the figure had risen to over 150 million. This figure is expected
to rise to almost 350 million by 2025.1 In the United
States today, a total of 20.8 million people—about 7.0
percent of the population—have diabetes.2 The
disease can lead to serious complications, and the risk for death
among
people with diabetes
is about twice that of people without diabetes of similar age.2
Essential
to managing diabetes properly is good blood glucose control,
but many patients fail to achieve or maintain it. Despite the
availability
of many diabetes therapies, there is substantial unmet need for
well-tolerated new treatments that provide sustained blood glucose
control. A long-time innovator in the development of diabetes
therapies, Bristol-Myers Squibb is sustaining its pioneering
role with compounds
in development to address the unmet needs of diabetics.
